What is Irony?

Irony, meaning dissimulation, feigned ignorance, in its broadest sense, is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or event in which what appears, on the surface, to be the case, differs radically from what is actually the case. Or simply, it is the whip that a person gets as a result for doing something for which he actually anticipated some good outcome out of it, if not great. Some people also compare it with karma, but I suppose there is a very thin line between karma and irony, karma is something which a person actually deserves as an outcome of his/her deeds but in the case of irony the outcomes could go overboard. An irony on its way, always makes a hay! … Ever heard of a swimmer drowning?! That’s called ironic! Well, we are all surrounded by the situational ironies of day to day life. गोलमाल है भई सब गोलमाल है!

अनजान जी एक रिटायर्ड सरकारी क्लर्क थे जो अपनी सभी ज़िम्मेदारियों से मुक्त हो चुके थे। और अब चीज़ों में नुख़्स निकालने के पद पर कार्यरत थे। अब इसमें उनकी भी कोई ख़ास ग़लती नहीं थी , कभी - कभी बुढ़ापे की मियाद में दाखिल होते समय कुछ कीटाणु बाक़ी ज़िन्दगी के लिए साथ हो लेते हैं। अनजान जी भी इन्हीं कीटाणुओं से ग्रसित हो गए। और जब कीटाणु हैं तो ज़ाहिर है कि बीमारी भी होगी। और बीमारी भी लगी तो नुख़्स निकालने की। और जब बीमारी है तो लक्षण भी होंगे , और लक्षण थे किसी भी बात पर घंटों चर्चा करना , उनकी ख़ामियों को जब तक सामने निकाल कर पेश नहीं कर देते , तब तक अनजान जी चुप नहीं होते थे। मानो जैसे अनजान जी अब ख़ामियां निकालने में Ph.D हासिल कर चुके थे। अब बातें करने के लिए माहौल भी चाहिए था , क्या करें बीमारी ही जो ऐसी लगी थी। और   घर में तो धर्म पत्नी के अलावा और कोई था नहीं , तो ज़्यादातर समय अपने साथियों के साथ बाहर ही बिताते थे। पत्नी के सा...

Eyelids, adapted the lazy mannerism, opened and closed and followed this mechanism with a repetitive gesture. Then a blurred figure in green appeared to be approaching me. By the time I Sherlocked it out that I was in a room of some hospital and the approaching figure must be some staff.  "You are more than lucky to get a bed in these times, you know," she said, maintaining some distance from the bed. I was trying to deduce the subtext in her just said lines but then she uttered again, "They are here, your results."  "Am I positive?!" I asked with some due hesitation, to which she nodded after waiting for a couple of seconds.  I sighed deeply. Her statement made me devastated and I just assumed it's the end of the world for me.
