What is Irony?
Irony,
meaning dissimulation, feigned ignorance, in its broadest sense, is a
rhetorical device, literary technique, or event in which what appears, on the
surface, to be the case, differs radically from what is actually the case. Or
simply, it is the whip that a person gets as a result for doing something for
which he actually anticipated some good outcome out of it, if not great. Some
people also compare it with karma, but I suppose there is a very thin line
between karma and irony, karma is something which a person actually deserves as
an outcome of his/her deeds but in the case of irony the outcomes could go
overboard.
An irony on
its way, always makes a hay! … Ever heard of a swimmer drowning?! That’s called
ironic! Well, we are all surrounded by the situational ironies of day to day
life. It’s like romance in the Bollywood movies, it just barges in, yes sir it
will barge, and it doesn’t give a damn even if it don’t make sense. Because if
it made any, it would not have been called irony! It is inevitable, invincible,
just like government, you could just watch it ruin your life with its actions
but there is nothing you could do about it. And it’s omnipresent and there is nothing
you could do about it too.
Look around
yourselves, there are many who get hit by the irony in their day to day life.
Ever noticed the farmers who grow crops for us? They have to go through a lot
to grow it up, their job is a back –
breaker! They are not able to provide for their families. They even take agricultural
loans and they end up in the detainment of installments and interest, and to
them unfortunately suicide seems the only way out of the spider’s web. But it’s
not suicide … It’s annihilation in disguise! They ask for the waiver from the
government who turns deaf ears to their pleas. Whereas the gigantic loan
amounts of the business magnates get waived off by the government. I suppose
that’s the only drill that the government follows.
Irony is
housed with the labors too who construct our houses, but do they really get to
live in one?! Their whole life is surrounded by the unbreakable jerry – built wall
times four. Freighted with bricks, concrete, cement etc their whole life, they bear
the burden of the load but it never gets the other way around ever… The load
never bear their burdens!
And what
about the soldiers of our army out there who are poised with their guns on the
border and feast upon the bullets of the enemy, decreed by the authorities. But
do we really deserve their sacrifice, as it is a dilemma that is their
sacrifice for their motherland or for the politics within?! As, we are so much inside the pants of corruption, that we only think of our benefit and in the process we are getting our nation termitic. Our martyrs sacrifice to keep us and the nation safe but in fact, we are dooming it. And as the saying goes, "In order to win peace, we have to go through war!" Isn't this ironic?!
We live in a
country where worshiping women and idolizing them as a goddess goes hand in
hand with being contemptible and insolent with them. For us, menstruation is a sin,
which might be the reason that still today in many parts of the country, a
woman is not allowed inside the temple during her periods but a rapist is
welcome!
Government’s
anatomized laws can’t be a miss here, the catch is, that the number of
loopholes in the laws are greater than the number of laws itself.
Even money
is ironic. Here, I said this! You chase it your whole life, sacrifice your
relations, invest your time and take risks, all of this to ride the wagon of
pleasure and at last you get it, you get in the green zone and the only thing
missing is, the pleasure!
Got a phone?
That’s ironic! You are connected to the social media on it and are liking,
loving, scowling and commenting on the posts of your “friends” and all of these
activities are accomplished by you, probably sitting in the corner of a room. Socialization
through isolation. Mission accomplished!
